LEV TESTING

GENERAL

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

What is an LEV System?

An LEV or Local Exhaust Ventilation System is responsible for reducing or removing contaminated air (fumes, dust, gas, toxins, mist, vapour) from a workplace in order to improve air quality, encourage a healthier working environment and reduce the risk of fire or explosion.

LEV systems are often made up of the following components: Extraction hood, ducting, air cleaner or arrestor, air mover and discharge

What is an LEV Test / COSHH test?

LEV Testing also known as COSHH test is the practise where trained engineers inspect and test your LEV system to ensure it functions optimally and adheres to COSHH regulations keeping your workplace clean and safe, as well as within the guidelines set out by HSG258 .

Why is LEV Testing Necessary?

The dangers of an incorrectly functioning LEV system can have dire consequences on workers’ health and increase the risk of fires or explosion thus putting lives at risk. LEV testing is therefore not only important but also a legal requirement as per COSHH regulations.

What are the legal requirements?

The legal requirments for LEV Testing is broken up as per COSHH & HSG258 regulations

COSHH: Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (Regulation 9)

Download

Important Excerpt: Regulation 9 (2): Where engineering controls are provided to meet the requirements of regulation 7, the employer shall ensure that thorough examination and testing of those controls are carried out
> in the case of local exhaust ventilation plant, at least once every 14 months
> in any other case, at suitable intervals

HSG258:

Who can perform LEV Tests?

It is important that the person performing the LEV test is competent to do so, with relevant qualifications, experience and training to complete the job.

Our engineers through years of experience have the extensive knowledge and skills required, and are fully qualified or hold:

BOHS (British Occupational Hygiene Society)

P601 (Commissioning and Thorough Examination and Testing of Local Exhaust Ventilation Systems)

P602 (Design Principles of Local Exhaust Ventilation Systems)

qualifications as evidence of our proficiency not only for testing of LEV systems but also design, installation, commissioning & testing of fume and dust extraction systems in accordance with HSE guidance HSG258.

How often does my LEV system need to be tested?

According to Regulation 9 of COSHH:

a) in the case of local exhaust ventilation plant, at least once every 14 months

b) in any other case, at suitable intervals

What happens if my LEV test fails?
